Mel South and Katie O’Brien have been awarded wildcards for the main draw at the International Women’s Open which is taking place at Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park between 14th-21st June (Box office: 01323 412 000).
Mel South is currently No 154 in the world rankings and has already picked up a $25k title this year in Sorrento, Australia. On Thursday, the 22 year-old became the first Brit since Jo Durie in 1992 to reach the quarter-final at the DFS Classic, a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Tier III event, in Edgbaston. In 2007, the National Tennis Centre based right-hander reached the last 16 in Eastbourne where she lost against the Wimbledon runner-up, Marion Bartoli.
Nigel Sears, Head Women’s Coach at the LTA, said: “I’m delighted that Mel and Katie have been awarded the opportunity to do well in front of a home crowd at Devonshire Park. Both players are in great form having won matches at this week’s DFS Classic event in Edgbaston.
